The Reasons I Enjoy My English-learning Journey
It has been 5 months since I started learning English with Melody. Melody often shares her principle with us, which is to “start with the end in mind”; I have goals to achieve regarding my English level, yet I would like to note down the cheerful parts during my learning journey -- this is not only a self-reflection but also a reminder to keep myself motivated.
Language-learning itself is enjoyable to me. I learned a bit of Japanese during high school; I speak French and utilized it when I was studying in Paris, France; I’m now practicing Cantonese and I even took Turkish classes for a year since I fell for the Turkish movie 'A Touch of Spice’. I guess I am obsessed with the exotic charm when pronouncing sentences in a newly-learned language.
When it comes to English, the process of learning itself widens my access to a broader world. Using English as a tool creates the ‘flywheel’ -- it optimizes the efficiency of improving language ability. The faster you are at getting better, the better you will get. In the process of learning the most-spoken language in the world, I got to acquire new information from all kinds of English sources including news, videos and blogs, which has enriched my knowledge in both leisure and professional areas. For example, I learned IT related knowledge with English materials and tutorials from YouTube and developer communities , and landed my dream company without a CS related degree. English truly opened new doors for me in life.
Practicing English expression skills is also crucial. I started to do what I later got to know as "deliberate practice", which often incidentally brings lovely interpersonal linkages. With English, I’m able to effectively communicate with more people, express my thoughts precisely, and obtain valuable opinions from them. In the workfield, I leverage this to earn trust and strengthen human connections. Outside of the office, it benefits me by getting to know more brilliant minds.
Melody is one of those brilliant minds. She is devoting, disciplined and target-oriented. These are reflected in how she designs syllabus and homework for each student, and how she proposes various learning resources actively, forming a vivid learning ecosystem by arranging free chat sessions, competitions and little challenges in our LINE group. Other than that, her crystal keen observation of people and the global-citizen mindset make all of our discussions insightful. To me, she is a great teacher, a trusted coach and a good friend.
With all these delightful experiences, I will surely continue this journey with Melody and her team. If my learning experiences and expectations echo yours, you should reserve a trial lesson with Melody right away ;)
